  • Absentee Owner:
    A plantation or estate owner who did not live on their property and manage it directly (they hired a manager)
  • Overseer :
    Someone who keeps watch over and directs the work of others. On a plantation this would be the manager who was paid a wage to organise the work of the slaves.
  • Plantation :
    A large area of farmland, or estate, planted with particular crops
  • Planter:
    A person who owns or manages a plantation
  • Plantocracy :
    The settlers who developed plantations in the Caribbean into successful businesses; the name combines their local rank and the status to which they aspired
  • Slave colony :
    A settlement on plantations, based on the labour of enslaved Africans
