  • Pressed into Service:
    Very few people volunteered to join the Royal Navy in the 17th and 18th centuries. A method of forcing people to join was 'Impressment', whereby Naval ships would come alongside merchant ships and Press Gangs would come on board and take any sea-faring men (not officers) they chose - as long as they left enough men to sail the merchant ship.
